The story of Garth of Izar, a character only seen in one episode of the original Star Trek, is one writer/producer Alec Peters first wrote 20 years ago. It wasn’t until 5 years ago, after playing Garth in the well known Star Trek: New Voyages fan film, did Alec turn the story into a screenplay.
A veteran entrepreneur and a 2004 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year winner, Alec decided that if he was going to make Axanar, it needed to look like a real film. In March of 2014 Alec raised $101,000 on Kickstarter and he and his team then produced Prelude to Axanar, a short film that served as proof of concept for what Alec was trying to achieve. In July the Axanar team raised $ 638,000 and started work on Axanar. This included renting a facility to use as a sound stage and start building sets.
Axanar has already begun to attract attention from Star Trek fans who want to see something new and innovative that honors the Star Trek they grew up on. If hundreds of thousands of fans are willing to see fan films that recreate TOS (The Original Series), then there is a huge appetite for something new and original and professionally made. And this has been born out by the over $1 million that has been raised by Axanar so far.
Pre-production is well underway and Axanar is scheduled to begin filming in Los Angeles in Janury of 2016 with a tentative release in time for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek!
