Captain’s Log – July 12, 2017

Doing good is important in life.  With so much negativity (just look at Star Trek fandom) in real life, it is important that we try and help others in any way we can.  “Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself” is probably the most important lesson one can learn, and it is ignored so often.

So when Star Trek New Voyages regular, and Axanar fan Brian Holloway needed help, Axanar fans were there.  Now, times are tough for a lot of people.  The economy hasn’t rebounded from the Great Recession as everyone had hoped, and a lot of people are struggling.  Every couple weeks I hear about an Axanar fan who is running a GoFundMe campaign as they are struggling financially. And while usually asked to share with Axanar fans, I don’t because if I did for one, I would have to do for everyone, and it would overwhelm Axanar fans with help requests.  So I share the campaigns on my personal page and ask my friends and fans who follow me to help out.  With the numbers of fans we have, even a $ 5 donation is a big help

Well, yesterday was a typically wonderful response.  Brian has $ 225 towards his $ 700 goal in the morning, and after I posted and asked some fans and friends to help, we got Brian over the finish line by the evening.  My attitude is always “Just donate $ 5 if you can” but some of my friends go above and beyond.  Axanar stalwart Reece Watkins, even donated twice, donating a second time even after an initial $ 100 donation, saying “Well, he was $50 from his goal and I couldn’t let that stand!”  This is not just why Reece is one of my very dear friends, but emblematic of the type of people we have as Axanar fans.

So thank you to Axanar fans for helping others.  It makes you all even more special.

Alec

Awesome! I am always pleased when people help other people, especially ones they don’t know personally. What is great about the Axanar Family is the sheer amount of comraderie and positivity I have experienced. Isn’t it great to be part of something that is bigger than us; that embodies the best of Star Trek?! I know that it is, thanks to each of you and now, Brian knows, too!
